South Africa car rental terms

The rental partner’s country conditions apply alongside the terms of the chosen car. Requirements, payment methods and the cover offered belong to that individual vehicle.

Which conditions apply to my car?

The country conditions below govern rentals in South Africa, and the selected car carries its own requirements on top of them. Both apply to a booking at the same time, and the listing states the driver’s age and experience, the payment method, the deposit and the insurance details that apply. A similar model can carry different requirements. Car rental options at the airport priced for real dates are what these conditions then get read against.

These conditions were checked on 5 September 2026. The booking confirmation carries the details for the rental agent, who is the person able to answer for a specific car and a specific set of dates. Questions about a condition go to the rental agent before payment.

Rental partner’s country conditions

  1. The minimum chargeable rental period is 24 hours. It means that if you rent a car for a few hours, you will be charged for a full day. For example, if you need a car from Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon, you will be charged for two full days.

  2. If you want to extend your rental period, you must inform the rental agent in advance.

  3. You must return your rental car with the same level of fuel you picked it up with. If the level of fuel is lower, you pay the difference at the rates of car rental company. If the level of fuel is higher, you are not compensated for the difference.

  4. If the car is returned so dirty that it hinders its inspection, the car will be washed at the customer's expense.

  5. Standard insurance does not cover damages to wheels, undercarriage, windscreen, and interior of the car.

  6. In case of an insured event, you must immediately notify the rental agent and receive a police report, except as otherwise agreed with the agent. Failure to fulfil these conditions will cancel the insurance issued for the car and make you fully responsible.

  7. The insurance is invalid in the event of deliberate damage to the car caused by intentional vandalism or neglect.

  8. The country has left-hand traffic, and the steering wheel is on the right side of the car.

  9. Rental cars are allowed to travel only on paved public roads.

  10. If you plan to travel outside the country, please notify the rental agent in advance to complete the required documents.

  11. The contact phone number with the correct country code provided at the time of booking must be available throughout the car rental period and on the day before pick-up. We do not accept any service quality claims, if it was impossible to contact the renter by mobile phone or messengers (Viber / WhatsApp / Telegram).

  12. The payment for fuel, parking, fines, and toll roads is the responsibility of the renter.

  13. The driver’s minimum age and driving experience are listed on each car’s page. These requirements may vary even for similar models. The rental agent has the right to refuse to provide the service at any time if the driver’s age and/or driving experience does not meet the requirements for a particular car.

Please use the filters to find cars that match your criteria.

  14. To rent a car, you must have a valid national driver’s license with details duplicated in Latin script. The expiry date on the license must be no earlier than the end date of the rental period. Copies or electronic licenses are not accepted. If your driver’s license is only valid in the country of issuance, we strongly recommend including an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your documents and providing it upon request.

  15. Cash payments can be made only in local currency of South Africa – ZAR.

  16. Renting a car may require a mandatory physical embossed credit card in the name of the main driver. If a credit card is required, ensure that you have it with you when picking up the car.

In some cases, rental companies may accept debit cards, which will also be specified during booking and in your voucher. The debit card must also be a physical, personalized card with embossed details and issued in the name of the main driver. Ensure that you have the card with you when picking up the car.

  17. Only small pets may travel in rented cars and should be kept in their travel carriers at all times.

What should I check before collection?

The physical driving licence and the required payment card are the two documents the handover depends on, and the name on the card has to match the main driver in the booking. Where a chosen car requires a credit card, a debit card is not an equivalent; the accepted option is the one specified during booking and in the voucher. The licence and card requirements set out each variant in full.

The handover checklist belongs with the documents when preparing for collection and return. The fuel level and the condition of the car at collection are the two facts the return is measured against, and the rental agent’s contact details stay useful for the whole trip. An insured event requires contacting that agent immediately.

Need help with a condition?

For a confirmed rental, questions about the car or its collection arrangements go to the rental agent named in the confirmation. For help finding information on this site, website support is the route. Card numbers, payment security codes and copies of identity documents do not belong in email to either address.

The airport car search remains available for comparing cars across a set of travel dates, and the cover attached to a selected car is described on that car. The terms current at the moment of payment are the ones that apply to the booking.
